It’s always a toss up whether it’s the end of school or Memorial Day weekend that signifies the official kick off of summer. Regardless-- SUMMER. IS. HERE. ((Cue: Exhale)).


When I think of long, warm days, I think of tomatoes, berries, peppers, and fresh peaches. Summer also means I get to spend more time in my garden. Every year, I plant tomatoes, peppers, varieties of basil, eggplant and, this year, I added lavender.


My favorite of these plants is basil. I throw basil into everything. From popsicles to salads, dressings to marinades. I even put bunches of fresh basil bouquets on my dining room table for decoration and to provide a welcoming fragrance. I can’t get enough!

Many of you will be hosting or attending an outdoor party this Memorial Day weekend and I wanted to share my go-to BBQ party dish, Bean + Lemon Basil Vinaigrette Salad. When I dreamed up this dish, I used my garden for inspiration and I knew basil would be my star ingredient.

Congratulations! You’ve made it! Baby is here and you’re finally on the “other side”.  Whether this is your first or fifth pregnancy, you’re probably craving a little balance now that your new babe has arrived. The postpartum period officially ends around 8 weeks after delivery, but for most mama’s this period seems to stretch on much longer. The postpartum period is filled with many physical and emotional highs and lows and figuring out how to navigate it all while meeting the many demands of a newborn can feel overwhelming. To find balance, a postpartum mother (any mother for that matter!) needs to take care of herself by getting rest, appropriate nutrition, and help during those first months.

Among my clients, I have noticed some common chatter- stress eating. This is something that a lot of us struggle with. However, in order to figure out how to combat stress eating, we first must understand the science of stress and how it affects our body.


When we experience stress, no matter the reason, our body reacts in a certain way. Cortisol is released to give you extra energy. It releases blood sugar and puts your immune system into overdrive, which is a good thing - until it becomes chronic. When you are chronically stressed, your body is in a state of low-level inflammation. Cortisol affects your hunger cues and makes you crave those quick energy carbs. Cortisol isn’t a bad guy, per se, it tells you to eat more because it is focused on survival not deadlines. However, chronic stress leads something I call “stress weight gain” and tends to show up in the abdominal region.
